I) What areas should be intentionally and objectively guided in a believer’s life?


  • A) Our Practical Conduct (vv. 1-8)
  • B) Our Permanent Calling (vv. 9-16)
  • C) Our Passionate Care (vv. 17-19)
  • D) Our Personal Commitments (vv. 20-25)

II) What is the principle by which these areas of a believer’s life are guided and governed? (v. 8)


 

Spiritual Principle: Since He is steadfast and trustworthy, we must order our lives around our unchanging Christ.

 

Application:

  1. When pressures arise, do not base your conduct on cultural whims but on Jesus Christ because He never changes.
  2. When attacks come fast and furious, do not base your calling on chaos but on Jesus Christ because He never changes.
  3. When hardships surface, do not base your decision to care on the winds of change but on Jesus Christ because He never changes. 
  4. When sin seems too great to bear, do not stake your commitments on random happenstance but on Jesus Christ because He never changes.

I) The Affirmation within the Father’s Discipline (vv. 4-13)


II) The Actions which Should Result from the Father’s Discipline (vv. 14-17)

III) The Approachability of the Father Who Disciplines (vv. 18-24)

IV) The Awaiting Kingdom for Those Who the Father Disciplines (vv. 25-29)

 

Application:

  1. We should not only accept the Lord’s discipline when it comes but should also pursue it because it produces in us the peace of righteousness.
  2. We should not only accept the Lord’s discipline when it comes but should also rejoice in it because it provides for us a perspective of the coming Kingdom.

Spiritual Principle: We should pursue the discipline of the Lord with diligence and joy because it produces peace for our lives with Christ and provides perspective for remembering His unshakable Kingdom.

  1. If you are a believer, fix your eyes on Jesus.
  2. If you are not a believer, turn your eyes to Jesus. 
  3. If you desire to be a disciple maker, help others to see Jesus.

I) We Endure by the Completed Work of Our Priest and in the Company of His People (vv. 19-25)


II) We Endure because Sin is Serious and the Saved do Suffer (vv. 26-34)

III) We Endure Keeping Our Confidence knowing the Coming One is Coming (vv. 35-39)

Spiritual Principle: We must not throw away our confidence, but instead through the gift of the church, we must encourage and enable one another to endure in Christ.

 

Application: As you endure, know . . .

  1. Jesus is grace to us and His church is a gift for us.
  2. At times, we may be grasped by suffering but we don’t have to be gripped by sin.
  3. We do indeed long for His coming but we should also live in His confidence.

I) The Completed Accomplishment of Jesus (vv. 1-10)


II) The Certain Authority of Jesus (vv. 11-18)


 

Application:

  1. Jesus' victory is finished.
  2. But, the final act of Jesus' victory is still to come.
  3. Therefore, our war against sin is won.
  4. And, our daily battle against sin is ongoing for now
  5. However, you do not have to live as if sin is your master, but you should live as a servant of Christ!

Spiritual Principle: Because of Jesus’s completed work and certain victory, our sanctification is both present and promised.

I) A Clear Conscience because of the Unblemished Lamb (vv. 1-14)


II) A Confident Condition because of the Returning Lord (vv. 15-28)

 

Application: Based on these two truths we see two applications that answer our two questions . . .

  1. Not only is confidence to serve Him possible, but in Christ you can find freedom and joy in living your life completely for Him.
  2. Because of the perfect sacrifice of Jesus, you have the invitation and right to worship Him now and for eternity.

Spiritual Principle: Because Jesus bore our sins, both freedom for and joy in serving Him await us now and for all eternity.

Spiritual Principle: We have been given a better promise with better hope for our on-going struggle with sin and status before the Father based on the better ministry of Jesus.

 

Application:

  1. Trust your death to sin to Christ’s finished work for you.
  2. Entrust your desire for obedience to Christ’s Spirit at work in you.
